# PsychoEgypt and fat epigenetics

## [Horus, Ra and psychedelus](https://www.reddit.com/r/science/s/v5LiztCUeE)

Apparently, Santa Claus isn’t the only [psychedelic enjoyer](https://www.ffungi.org/blog/the-influence-of-hallucinogenic-mushrooms-on-christmas) (amanita muscaria 🍄).

And yeah, let’s not forget [kykeon from Eleusinian Mysteries’ psychedelic orgies](https://greekreporter.com/2023/06/24/psychedelics-ancient-greece-eleusinian-mysteries/) (likely ergot fungus 🌾)! Alas, they’re yearly only, but still.

Ages pass, molecular techniques sharepen, and we now know that egyptians most likely drank a mixture of:

* harmala

* egyptian lotus

* bodily fluids (let’s hope they were gender-agnostic and healthy!)

* honey/royal jelly 🐝 <s>Babe y’know why they call me royal jelly</s>

> Our analyses revealed traces of ***Peganum harmala***, ***Nimphaea nouchali var. caerulea***, and a plant of the **Cleome genus**, all of which are traditionally proven to have psychotropic and medicinal properties. Additionally, the identification of **human fluids** suggests their direct involvement in these rituals. Furthermore, metabolomics and SR µ-FTIR analyses also revealed the presence of **fermented fruit-based liquid** and other ingredients such as **honey** or **royal jelly**.

Mesopotamians, it seems, were [opioid and cannabis enjoyers](https://www.science.org/content/article/did-ancient-mesopotamians-get-high-near-eastern-rituals-may-have-included-opium).

![Drugs and religion have been a potent combination for millennia, from cannabis at ancient funerary sites to psychedelic retreats today](https://images.theconversation.com/files/537331/original/file-20230713-19-sbub8f.jpeg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&q=45&auto=format&w=1000&fit=clip align="left")

You may say “okaay those guys were nuts”. But then again, how do you infuse a rung of magic into rituals?

* **Trance**\-like states (repeating mantras, movements like circling, shuckling, etc.)

* **Sex**

* **Psychotropic** and **entheogenic** substances

* And possibly, rising from above - light **hyperventilation**/**hypoxia**!

## [Yo fat cells are so fat they remember!](https://www.reddit.com/r/ScientificNutrition/s/Cmigz8aKmR)

* Mice had obesity-induced alterations in the **adipocyte epigenome** that persisted after weight loss

* It made them function and respond to ‘healthy’ stimuli worse

* Mice carrying “obesogenic memory” showed accelerated rebound weight gain

[Also, once insulin resistant - easier to get there afterwards.](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41366-021-01021-y?fromPaywallRec=false) IR genes showed a similar epigenetic change pattern:
